#233: Viagra Expenses

I'm annoyed that people can get Viagra as part of their medical plans, which drives up insurance premiums for everyone. To me, it's like going to the doctor complaining that I can't appreciate the A-team like I used to and getting medicated so that I do. You either have it or you don't. Nature is the best one to determine if it's time to hang up the shoes. And if you don't want to accept that, it's fine if you want to buy the drug, but I don't believe it's a valid medical expense. Severity: 3

I feel like I keep going on about this birth control annoyance, but it fits this scenario. I recently was rejected at the point of sale by my insurance plan for my birth control. Research revealed BCBS doesn't cover this particular contraceptive. However, when they sent the "approved prescription" list to me, I noticed VIAGRA was on there. I, too, was pissed off! I threw a big baby fit until my husband reminded me that it's middle-aged MEN who run the insurance companies. Oh yeah... Duh.

Vicki, you are so right! I listened to a program last year on NPR about how many health insurance plans won't cover birth control, even though people have been petitioning the plans for years to add it, and yet Viagra was covered across the board in less than a year after its debut. Infuriating.
